We were incredibly lucky to have Emeritus Professor David Norton along with ecologists Josh Foster, Becky Clements and Tyler Jarman in the Hakataramea Valley to share their expertise at a field day at Mt Florence and Maungatiro on 2 August, 2022.
The Managing Native Biodiversity on Farms field day was run as a pilot for the Farming with Native Biodiversity (FwNB) project, which you can find more about and access a heap of useful resources by clicking here. You might notice our catchment feature in some of the website images as well.
Although the weather didn't quite deliver, it didn't manage to dampen the spirits of the great crowd attending. Beginning in the Mt Florence woolshed, David Norton presented what the environment would have originally been like, what special plants, animals or insects were likely here, and gave insight to how we can continue to farm alongside the natural environment while keeping the biodiversity flourishing on our farms. Click below for the presentation notes.
Following the presentation the group headed out onto the neighbouring Maungatiro property where some of the special species were pointed out and some great discussion was had about building biodiversity conservation into farm management and biodiversity monitoring. Information about some of the species discovered on the field walk can be found in the document link below.
A big thank you to Professor Norton, Esther Richardson and the FwNB team for coming to speak in our catchment. Also thanks to Nicole and Shane and Simon and Anna, for hosting us. Enjoy the images from the field day below courtesy of the FwNB project.
