Eco-Sourcing Resources

Eco-sourcing is collecting seeds close to where they are to be planted, this means the plants will be suited to our local conditions and more likely to survive.

Through propagating native plants from eco-sourced seeds you help to maintain the area's unique characteristics, reduce the risk of introducing plants that become invasive, and increase genetic diversity compared to planting plants grown from cuttings.

We have developed some fun resources for those wishing to give eco-sourcing a go, these have been designed to encourage the whole family to get involved. Click on the links below to download the Eco-Sourcing Guide and Native Plant Scavenger Hunt which identifies native plants in the Hakataramea Catchment and Waitaki region and shares a little about them.

If you would like to donate the seeds you collect to the Community Native Nursery please ensure you keep the seeds you collect from each plant species separate and correctly label them, including:

  • Where they were collected

  • What date they were collected

  • The name of the plant species

  • Any identifying features of the plant
